The collection is exceptional both from a documentary point of view and geographically. It covers numerous fields (archeology, statuary, architecture, epigraphy, ethnography, etc.), and spans a wide range of countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, India, China, Thailand, Laos …

The initial collection consisted of photographs brought back from EFEO expeditions in the 1900's and has been expanded regularly since then.

The images are of major scientific interest. In many cases they are the only remaining evidence of monuments as they were prior to natural and human destruction. When used alongside archeological dig records, they are an essential tool for research and restoration efforts.
